The dark and mysterious Kylo Ren may be taking his cues from an older source within the Star Wars universe. Rumors swirl about the character’s origins, but we’re still mostly in the shadows. Is he a singular agent? Or is he merely a puppet of larger evil? JJ Abrams reveals (in dependable JJ fashion) some vital info on the dark villain of one of the most hotly anticipated films of this or any year, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So what’s up with that broadsaber, JJ? Inquiring minds want to really really know.
Interestingly enough, Abrams himself has admitted that some circulating rumors have turned out to be true, he (Khan) hasn’t revealed which ones. But in a sit down with EW, Abrams chatted up a few things that have been irking a few folks, for instance: Kylo’s tri-bladed lightsaber:
“The lightsaber is something that he built himself, and is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character.”
So Kylo built that himself; pretty cool. This guy’s lightsaber design was able to piss people off in this galaxy not that long ago, so imagine what he’ll be serving up for Luke and the crew. Then there’s Kylo’s mask, which draws a vague comparison:
“The movie explains the origins of the mask and where it’s from, but the design was meant to be a nod to the Vader mask. (Ren) is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”
In part, JJ also gave us a taste of Kylo’s origins:
“He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of the Ren.”
Interesting! Mysterious mask, lightsaber, and creepy illuminati type organizations? Just who is this masked man? We’ll have to take what we can get until The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18th.
