Now this is the story all about how Xena: Warrior Princess got turned upside down… Sorry, I had to get that out before my head exploded. That’s right, There are two reboot/re-imaginings in the works, Xena: Warrior Princess and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
Now I can understand how many people might be confused about the Xena reboot. It’s been a back and forth of rumor and denials. Once Lucy Lawless tweeted that she didn’t know anything about a reboot I put that one to rest in my mind. Now NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt has confirmed that a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot is on the table.
Yes, we’re in the early stages of developing a new take on Xena and we’re looking for a writer. We want to do it. I don’t think it’s just a continuation, but we haven’t gotten that far. I think it’s a great character, and we should try to figure out how to revive it somehow.
He went on to say:
We’d love to have Lucy be a part of it — if we felt that her presence didn’t overshadow the direction we take with it. I’m not sure how she could be part of it if she wasn’t playing Xena, and I don’t know if that’s a direction we’ll ever go.
Ouch, that is gonna get some fans going, but really, did any of us expect Lucy to do all those flips and stuff? I would like to see her do some kind of hand-off to the new star though, perhaps a daughter? NBC is said to be planning a 2016 debut for the new series which seems pretty quick at this stage, but we’ll see how things develop.
In a time of ancient Sitcoms, Laugh tracks and Cop Shows…
A land in turmoil cried out for a hero.
He was Will Smith, a rapping prince forged in the heat of the playground.
The power…the passion…the Butler.
His courage will change Bel-Air.
OK, maybe it doesn’t work so well swapping the opening sequences, but you’ve got to give me a couple of points for effort. Joining Xena and the host of other 90’s sitcoms finding new life in reboots and continuations, we find The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Word is that Will Smith is putting his production company behind the effort to bring back the series.
So far Smith is only on board as a producer and isn’t expected to appear on the show, but I wouldn’t count out a cameo at some point. Most of you are thinking it so I’m just gonna get right out and say it.
Is this just another vehicle paid for and produced by Will Smith for his son Jaden Smith? He’s 17 now and just about the age for the character. I imagine that Papa Smith would like to keep it in the family.
Since this news, if accurate, puts the production in the very early stages, we don’t know if this is going to be a full-blown reboot or a continuation type scenario like Girl Meets World. The format could end up on regular television, but then again it could get the Netflix treatment and end up on a streaming service.
What do you think about these two series getting the revival treatment?
