Do you like Han Solo? Of course, you do. He may be one of the most iconic characters in film history thanks to his portrayal by the legendary-in-his-own-right Harrison Ford. But can Solo fly solo without Ford, and in his own film set apart from the main Star Wars storyline? That’s the question that Disney and Lucasfilm hope is answered by an affirmative ‘yes’ in the next couple of years when the untitled Star Wars Anthology film about the adventures of young Han Solo arrives in theaters everywhere. But what will that movie look like? Lucasfilm’s top executive recently offered some insight.
In the latest edition of Entertainment Weeky, Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy shed some insight into what they’re looking for in a young Han Solo for his early years adventure, which is being scripted by Lawrence Kadan and his son Jon Kasdan and will be directed by LEGO Movie duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
“We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “…I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love…You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.”
Meanwhile, if casting agents and handsome young actors are wondering what age range their looking for in a young Han Solo, Kennedy says…
“He’ll definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s,” she says. “We’re not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo.”
No word on the Han Solo film will hit theaters, but likely it will be sometime in 2018 or 2019. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18; Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One will be in theaters the following Christmas; and Star Wars Episode VIII will be in theaters May 2017.
