The official theatrical poster for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been revealed at D23! J.J. Abrams’ seventh installment of the Star Wars series had up until this point been taking the minimalist approach on their posters and banners, using only the logo. Now we’ve been graced with the art of longtime Star Wars artist Drew Struzan!
Struzan is officially in retirement, which just goes to show how personal of a choice his artwork was for this project. Reports have it that Abrams himself contacted Struzan regarding painting the poster, which Struzan agreed to do.
Struzan is a bit of an industry-wide legend as far as movie posters go, and was the artist behind every previous Star Wars poster. He’s known and respected for his old-school, hand painted poster methods, especially in this age of Photoshop and various other image editing software. Other movies with posters done by Struzan’s hand are those of the Indiana Jones franchise, Back to the Future, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and many more. Most recently he leant his artistic talents to the cover for Batkid Begins.
Catch Star Wars: The Force Awakens in theaters on December 18th.
