“The rocket is both a means of propulsion and a weapon!” We’ve seen how Groot and Star-Lord came to be who they are, and now in Marvel’s latest Guardians of the Galaxy 2-part short, we’re shown how Rocket Raccoon became the scamp we all know and love. Although, as you’ll see after watching the videos, a lot of what makes Rocket who he is was already part of his feisty, snarky personality!
The first video finds us in a biological weapon facility, where a mother raccoon and her babies are in a cage. One of the younggins acts out protectively against a mechanical arm, causing a robotic-sounding voice to announce “Subject 89-E13: undersized with below average strength, yet demonstrates courage and elevated aggression.” Sound like anyone we know?
Rocket is then forced to undergo procedures that make him stronger, smarter, and more evolved- hence the walking on two legs and talking. The whole ordeal has him feeling pretty lonely and isolated, at least until he finds a friend in Groot. The second video ends with the duo teaming up and freeing all the captives of the facility, with a sad moment where Rocket’s family runs by and his mother proves unaffected by his calls out to her. The final note is far from a sad one, however: showing Rocket and Groot escaping together towards who knows where, as the series does not take place in the same continuity as the movie.
The animated Guardians of the Galaxy series premiers on Disney XD on September 25th. The voice cast is stocked with Will Friedle as Star-Lord, Trevor Devall as Rocket Raccoon, Kevin Michael Richardson as Groot, Vanessa Marshall as Gamora, David Sobolov as Drax the Destroyer, and James Arnold Taylor as Yondu. Here’s the plot synopsis:
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.
