They spend time and money crafting costumes parading around conventions and other events as their favorite pop culture characters. Some cosplayers craft costumes that are so complex and detailed orientated that they rival anything coming out of Hollywood. These cosplayers become celebrities among themselves, making a professional careers out of displaying their passion. Of course, masquarding misters and madams making a profit off licensed characters without express consent is a questionable practice.
So, it comes as a surprise to see Marvel recognizing cosplayers is a slew of upcoming comic variant issues.

These homemade, hand-crafted costumes are so elaborate, it looks like they leapt off the comic page. The Cosplay Variant initiative is our way of supporting a community that supports us.”

At first I thought they would have chosen better cosplays, more professionnal, but in the end, the effect does exactly what its meant to. It directly connect to us, readers, to fellow nerds in a way that celebrates everything it means to be a fan.
