If you thought Batman V Superman was the sequel to Man of Steel, you might be mistaken. There is a rumor going around that a direct sequel to Man of Steel is being added to DC / Warner Bros timeline. Not only that, but Mad Max: Fury Road director George Miller is in talks to sit behind the camera.
John Schnepp, the director of the documentary The Death of Superman Lives, has reportedly heard that Miller has been lined up to direct Man of Steel 2. Schnepp recently appeared on Popcorn Talk (via Latino Review), and that’s where he let slip that Miller is “doing” a sequel to Man of Steel.
Schnepp’s comment isn’t concrete. DC / Warner Bros. have not made any formal announcement or even mentioned in anyway they’re planning a Man of Steel sequel. But, with the contacts and connections Schepp has made while making The Death of Superman Lives doc, it’s entirely plausible that he’s heard some shop talk.
DC’s Cinematic Timeline is currently set as follows:
March 25th, 2016 – Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
August 5th, 2016 – Suicide Squad
June 23rd, 2017 – Wonder Woman
November 17th, 2017 – Justice League Part One
March 23rd, 2018 – The Flash
July 27th, 2018 – Aquaman
Unspecified Date in 2018- The Batman
April 5th, 2019 – Shazam
June 14th, 2019 – Justice League Part Two
April 3rd, 2020 – Cyborg
June 19th, 2020 – Green Lantern Corps
They put these big release date schedule up years in advance, and as we saw with Sony and Marvel getting together on Spider-man and pushing a bunch of other Marvel movies back, those dates and titles are rather penciled in.
Depending on the success of Batman V Superman, it would stand to reason that DC / Warner would want to continue seeing Bats and Supes have solo films – much like Marvel has done with Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. And, since Ben Affleck is already on board to direct and co-write a solo Dark Knight movie, why not another Man of Steel?
This talk of George Miller directing is likely whispers in the wind, stemming from when the studio previously had him on the hook to direct a Justice League movie way before their was a DCU. That movie was going to star D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Adam Brody as The Flash, Common as Green Lantern, and Jay Baruchel as the villain, Maxwell Lord, but it fell apart. And now, with Millers claimed success of Mad Max: Fury Road, Warner Bros. definitely has him in their Rolodex for Man of Steel 2 or any number of their planned DC super hero films.
Of course, if Miller were to take on Superman, he’d be taking over the franchise from Zack Snyder; whom DC / Warner has built their whole planned DCU around.
Zack and George are both visual directors. They are in the same league in terms of technical skill and ability. The difference is George is good with characterizations. And that’s something Superman very much needs.
Take today’s news with a grain of salt, but if it turns out to be true, would you want Miller to direct a Superman movie? What would you want to see in the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
