It’s the most unexpected franchise of the 21st century, a prequel series to series of science fiction movies made in the 1960s and 70s. But hey, money is money, and Hollywood will take your money. And if you want to put more money down on more Planet of the Apes movies, they’re cool with that. So let’s talk about the next Apes film, The War of the Planet of the Apes, the third film in the series that charts the fall of man and the rise of apes will begin shooting sometime this fall. They better get some casting done then, right? Well good news War now has a lead [human] actor.
According to Deadline, East Los High star Gabriel Chavarria has been cast the film’s main human character. There’s been no word yet on whether or not Andy Serkis will return as ape leader Caesar, but it seems likely that he’ll be back in some capacity. Chavarria, meanwhile, isn’t a well-known actor, but he’s enjoyed small roles in the movie Freedom Writers and the TV series Southland and Aquarius.
There’s no word on what role Chavarria will play in the film, will he be a friend to the apes or an enemy? Indeed, not much has yet to be revealed about the third chapter of the rebooted/re-imagined prequel series, but it’s safe to say, as the title implies, that it will continue where Dawn of the Planet of the Apes left off with the beginning of a war between humans and apes. Obviously, we know where this is all going, but what moves will the film specifically reveal as the two factions fight for control of the planet? Returning director Matt Reeves only knows.
The War of the Planet of the Apes begins shooting this October in Vancouver for a summer 2017 release date. We’ll have more information about the project as it comes in.
