Perhaps he’s just in a science fiction frame of mind. Ridley Scott‘s next film is The Martian, the story about an astronaut trying to survive alone on Mars opens in theaters in just a couple of months. Two of Scott’s signature movies were science fiction based, Alien and Blade Runner, the former was the basis of the deeply divisive prequel/whatchamacallit Prometheus, which came out in 2012. There’s been a lot of talk about a Prometheus sequel, and the end of the film certainly set it up perfectly, but circumstances have kept it spinning in the proverbial bullpen. But now, Scott says brace yourselves because Prometheus 2 is his next project.
“I was already on to my next movie!” Scott said to Empire Magazine in an interview. “I was starting to look for locations for my next movie, which is Prometheus 2.” So that’s pretty definitive.
Not much is known about the sequel yet, other than it will likely follow starship Prometheus survivors Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) as they set out in search of the Engineers to find out why they want to destroy their creations, the human race. The original film was praised for its production designed, technical mastery, and the performance of Fassbender as the android David, but many fans felt the story and the tenuous ties to the first Alien left a lot to be desired. A lot of that blame fell on screenwriter Damon Lindelof. Prometheus 2 is being written by Michael Green and Jack Paglen.
Prometheus 2 is currently expected to be in theaters sometime in 2017, and then it will be followed by Alien 5, the next sequel in the Alien series which is currently in development under District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp. We’ll keep you posted with all the latest developments.
