If you’ve ever wondered how the majority of sequels get knocked off track and can’t hold a candle to the original, then this video from Key & Peele will help you put all the pieces together. “It’s called brainstorming, not brain drizzling, sweet pea,” intones Star Magic Jackson, Jr (Peele) as he waxes fabulous to Key’s spot-on Joe Dante. Comedy maestros Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele take a stab at Hollywood’s questionable sequel-making process in this bit. For a taste of some killer movie making riffing, hit the jump.
The parody is razor-sharp; they cleverly acknowledge the excesses prevalent in sequels, yet challenge the need for some sequels in the first place. Real Life Director Joe Dante (not Key), was keen to get in on the act, discussing the following:
When I was asked to do the sequel, which I originally turned down because it was so hard to make the first one… The only reason I decided to make the sequel was because years later they had tried to make a sequel and couldn’t figure out how to do it, and they really wanted another one. So they said to me, “If you give us a couple of cans of film with gremlins in them next summer, you can do whatever you want.” And they gave me three times the money we had to make the first one. So I made ‘Gremlins 2,’ which was essentially about how there didn’t need to be a sequel to ‘Gremlins.’
So sit back, laugh your ass off, and muse to yourself about how you always wanted an electric gremlin of your own.
You know you did.
