Nerds and Star Wars go together like peanut butter and jam, which is why whenever the nerd-centric comedy The Big Bang Theory needs to go for a rim shot it’s usually to a Star Wars joke. As you may have heard, there’s a new Star wars movie coming out this December called Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and there is some degree of excitement about it, even among TV characters. So when Star Wars opens at Christmas time, you can imagine that Leonard, Sheldon, Howard and Raj will be eagerly in line awaiting entry into the first screening, only now you won’t have to. This December, you’ll be able to see the Force awaken on Big Bang Theory too.
While talking to TVLine, Big Bang executive producer Steve Molaro confirmed that the midseason finale of the upcoming ninth season of the sitcom will involve the show’s nerdy quartet engaging in the gathering hype around the J.J. Abrams film. “We’re talking about how that will be weaved into [the guys’] lives. And we have some really cool ideas,” Molaro said.
Through the years, not only has Big Bang crafted a lot of Wars relate punchlines, but an entire episode was made with approval and participation of Lucasfilm back in 2014 to celebrate Star Wars Day, May 4. It’s uncertain whether the episode will involve anything as elaborate as sending Sheldon to Dagobah to talk to the Force ghost of Professor Proton. In fact, it seems as of right this minute there isn’t much a plan at all.
“Obviously, we’re all excited about it, just as human beings – and the characters are as well. I don’t know exactly how it’s going to play in, but it won’t be ignored,” Molaro added.
The Big Bang Theory returns next month on CBS.
