“Who you gonna call? Bill Murray!”

After a 26 year wait, fans of Ghostbusters are finally getting a new movie. So what took so long? We all knew that Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis worked diligently to get a script approved. However, it was missing a key ingredient – Bill Murray. For many years, Murray shut down the idea of making a new Ghostbusters movie. Therefore, without the blessing of one of the movie’s key players, Ghostbusters sat dead in the water. Time would not wait forever.

With the passing of Harold Ramis, the process eventually moved beyond Murray and a new movie was scripted. Without him, though, there would always be a sense of something missing. That is until recently when Murray made a cameo in Paul Feig‘s Ghostbusters.. So what gives? Why did he make an appearance after all this time putting the idea down?

According to a recent interview with Vulture, he felt he was doing more harm by not participating. Here is what Murray had to say about his cameo:

“I thought about it for a very long time. Like, many, many months. No, that’s not right. I was seriously thinking about this for years, really … It kept eating at me, and I really respect those girls. And then I started to feel like if I didn’t do this movie, maybe somebody would write a bad review or something, thinking there was some sort of disapproval [on my part].”

He isn’t kidding when he says he’s been thinking about this issue for years. How many of you know that Bill Murray didn’t like Ghostbusters II? The short version of the story is that he was never satisfied with how the second movie turned out. This really bothered him. So if and when the opportunity to make a third movie ever came up, he wanted it to be close to perfect.

Murray should be commended for his appearance in the new movie. By showing up, he practically gives his blessing and now the movie and fans can feel complete. Although, at the same time, if it wasn’t for him, the movie would have been made a lot sooner and we wouldn’t be talking about this right now.

As for the Ghostbusters shoot itself, Murray only had nice things to say:

You know, they were incredibly nice to ask me, and I really enjoyed being there. They have such a jolly group, and they are going to have great success with this project. I didn’t want to overshadow [them] or anything, and I feel really good about it.

So what do you think? Do you forgive Bill for holding out for so long? Do you feel better now that he’s given the okay for the movie by showing up in it? Let us know.

Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Chris Hemsworth, and Neil Casey lead the newGhostbusters, which opens July 15, 2016.
