We’re still a little over 100 days until the premiere of Star Wars VII. However, that won’t hold new information back regarding Star Wars VIII. According to the latest reports, it seems that there are three women up for a leading role in the next film. Those names are Tatiana Maslany, Gina Rodriguez, and Olivia Cooke. Get ready, because it’s time to play the speculation game.

Right now, no one knows anything about the role that is being cast. The only thing that is known is that it’s in the next Star Wars movie and that it’s a “primary” role.

For those of you who don’t know, Gina Rodriguez is best known for her role on the show Jane the Virgin. She even won a Golden Globe for her portrayal. Other than her current role, she had a short stint on The Bold and The Beautiful. She’s still a fresh face in the Hollywood scene. This casting could go either way. Having an actress with not a big resume attached to her name could be a good thing because audiences would be able to go into the movie without any kind of predetermined feelings. Having a Golden Globe means that she’s been recognized to have some talent. We’ll have to see how this plays out.

Speaking of fresh faces. Olivia Cooke has an even shorter resume compared to Gina Rodriguez. Cooke is probably best known for her role as Emma Decody on Bates Motel. It’s really hard to gauge how well Cooke would do in the movie since we don’t know much about her nor the movie part she’s up for.

The biggest name on that list has to be Tatiana Maslany. She’s best known for her multiple roles on the hit show Orphan Black. This would be an easy choice as she’s not only a fan favorite, but she’s also a good actress. I mean she does go from soccer mom to drugged out crazy person and everything in between on the show.

Seeing Maslany as a “good guy” would be great. Ideally, I would love to see her playing a Sith. She has the potential to be one of the best villains ever. No matter what happens or who get’s cast in what role, I think people will be happy to see any kind of news regarding women being considered for primary roles in major movies like Star Wars. Especially since the franchise ran into these problems when the new cast was announced.

Star Wars VII needs to come sooner so we can find out what’s going on in Star Wars VIII. I know it sounds silly, but you know it’s the truth.

Star Wars VII premieres December 18.
