While production ramps up for Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of Ernest Cline‘s Ready Player One, casting is narrowing down. Nick Robinson is reported to be the first choice for the lead character Wade Watts, but who might play Art3mis, the VR avatar who is also after that elusive Easter Egg that will win that multi-billion-dollar OASIS fortune? Word is that Elle Fanning, Olivia Cooke, and Lola Kirke are at the top of the list.
As Spielberg wraps up his work on Bridge of Spies with Tom Hanks and The BFG, casting director Ellen Lewis will be shifting through the top contenders.
Fanning (Maleficant, The Boxtrolls) needs no introduction and has worked on a Spielberg production in Super 8 so she is not unknown to the director. Next up is Lola Kirke.
Kirke was most recently in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, and while she has some other credits including a role in Noah Baumbach’s Mistress America. she doesn’t have the audience recognition value that Fanning would just yet. Then there is Olivia Cooke, who is also on the short list for Star Wars VIII.
You’ll most likely recognize Cooke from A&E’s Bates Motel. She was also in The Signal, and Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. Her role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl is considered by many to be her break-out role and why she is getting so much attention from casting directors these days.
There’s two years until the scheduled December 15th, 2017 release date for Ready Player One so there’s still a lot of work ahead for the production. As casting news continues to trickle onto the Internet we’ll bring it to you here.
What I really want to know about and hope might happen is the return of Gene Wilder to the big screen to play James Halliday, the reclusive creator of OASIS. That casting coup would be incredible.
