In the long history of superheroes, the costumes they wear have become almost as iconic as the person who wears them. From Superman’s “S” to the green of Green Arrrow’s outfit, there’s always that one characteristic that stands out the most. Included in that history of costumes are helmets. One of the most famous helmets has to be Doctor Fate’s helmet. Then, of course, you have the Nova Helmet, Juggernaut’s helmet, and Magneto’s helmet. Now we can add one more dome piece to the collection. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to John Diggle’s (David Ramsey) helmet.
Before we talk about Diggle’s new digs, here is what Executive Producer, Mark Guggenheim, had to say about John Diggle’s new suit,
“We try to be very consistent with our characterization. I don’t think Diggle looks at it as a costume per se. Oliver, in the last season, gave him advice in terms of concealing his identity, and so Diggle approaches it from a very practical standpoint. He followed Oliver’s advice and he’s got a means of concealing his identity, but I think Diggle would probably react to anyone calling it a costume.”
There are several things that come to mind when I see that helmet. Forget the whole costume, let’s just focus on the helmet because that thing sticks out like a sore thumb (not to mention, the rest of the costume is just a leather jacket a far as we can tell from the image). That helmet is ugly as …well, you get the idea. As far as I can tell from the image that was released, the top of the helmet is made out of some kind of mesh material. Then you have the gigantic, metal muttonchops that do something. The cherry on top has to be the sweet chin strap to make sure that it’s tightly secured on Diggles head. .
I wonder if Diggle knows you can still see his face in that thing. I guess if Clark Kent can get away with just wearing a pair of glasses, this helmet is like draping a blanket over his head.
My hope is that there is more to this helmet than meets the eye. How does someone who knows Ray Palmer end up with something like this? I have this bad feeling that this is just a chunk of metal that sits on his head. Bullets better bounce off of this thing or at least stop telepathic powers. Otherwise, they’ll really need to reconsider this costume thing. I guess time will only tell. In the meantime, I’ve already got an idea what he could wear next.
As a side note, I really hope the season premiere is full of costume jokes pointed at Diggle. That could help lighten the situation.
What do you think of Diggle’s net outfit? Sound off below in the comment section. Also, please no “it looks like Magneto’s helmet” comments. There have been plenty of those already.
Season 4 of Arrow premieres on Wednesday, October 7.
