It’s been a rumor almost as old as the existence of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the rumor that the Hulk would be going into space post-Avengers: Age of Ultron and will encounter the Guardians. This rumor has floated out there (in space) in a couple of forms, whether it’s a Planet Hulk movie where the Guardians would enter the story at some point, or whether it was Hulk leaving Earth at the end of Ultron and bumping into the Guardians somewhere in space, it was going down. Except no, no it’s not. And director James Gunn has said so again in an impromptu Twitter Q&A.

Here are the relevant tweets from Gunn, first concerning the Hulk:

Also, don’t expect Captain Marvel to make her movie debut in Guardians 2:

In fact, don’t expect too many too characters in the sequel at all:

Gunn’s Hulk answer is not news really, he’s always been firm about his thoughts on the rumor for a while now. “I can answer that question very easily: it is absolute, 100% bull—t,” Gunn said back in a 2014 interview. “It feels like a great relief to finally say this after all the dumb stuff on the Internet. There’s not going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never going to be a Planet Hulk movie, there was never a plan for the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy – I wouldn’t want the Hulk to team up with the Guardians of the Galaxy! And it’s all a bunch of complete bull—t.”

The other insight is that Gunn seems to want to focus on the core group in Volume 2 rather than bringing in a whole new class of potential Guardians, which we’ll call the Ultron option. That’s a good decision considering it was the team dynamic of the five main characters that everyone loved about the first movie, but it will be downer for all those Marvel fans hoping that their favorite space race character might turn up in the sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 begins shooting in the new year with a release date for the Summer of 2017. We’ll have more news on the project as it comes in.
