When Disney made the decision to repurpose much of their classic animated film stable as new live action films, the choice was met with a bit of trepidation. Entire generations of children were raised with these timeless films, which all began with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, back in 1937, so many hold these movies sacred. Still, when Disney began their experiment with 2010’s Alice in Wonderland, which was part reboot of the classic Disney animated film and part sequel to the same, audiences flocked to the cinemas to see the film, driving the global box office total to over $1bil. Being the money making machine it is, Disney took the ball and ran with it, and quickly followed up with Maleficent and Cinderella. The next live action adaptation on the slate is The Jungle Book and if the new trailer is any indication, it may be the best animated to live-action adaptation that the studio has produced.
Last month, Disney unveiled the first footage from the upcoming film but, considering the absolutely stringent security measures, not even leaked footage of the film managed to make it out of Anaheim. Honestly, this is a wonderful thing to happen, considering the horrid quality of those bootleg footage shots. This is a movie that deserves for every single frame to be viewed in HD and, luckily, this first trailer shows you exactly why. Take a look.
Actually, this is one that demands repeat viewings, so feel free to watch it a few times! Don’t worry, we’ll wait.
There are about seven levels of awesome in that 100 seconds of footage. If you are unfamiliar with the Rudyard Kipling stories, or somehow missed the wonderful 1967 animated Disney musical, the story centers around Mowgli, a boy raised by wolves in the jungle, and his animal acquaintances, which include Baloo the bear, Kaa the python, Bagheera the panther, the dangerous tiger Shere Khan, and, in the Disney version, King Louie the ape. The story tells the tale of bravery and friendship and, in the end, is truly an example that “family” doesn’t always mean “blood”.
Each moment of this trailer offers gorgeous scenery, much of which is some of the best damn CGI movie audiences have ever seen. More importantly, however, the trailer offers a glimpse at an adaptation that carries with it the heart and soul of its source material and that alone is worth cheering.
The film stars Scarlett Johansson (Kaa), Idris Elba (Shere Khan), Bill Murray (Baloo), Ben Kingsley (Bagheera), Christopher Walken (King Louie), Giancarlo Esposito (Akela), Lupita Nyong’o (Raksha), and Neel Sethi (Mowgli) in his first role, and is directed by Chef’s Jon Favreau.
The Jungle Book hits theaters April 15, 2016.
