allegiant

Although it lacks the cultural and financial punch of either Twilight or The Hunger Games film series, Divergent marches on to its inevitable two-part conclusion thanks to nearly $600 million in global box office sales for part one and part two. Insurgent was released earlier this year, and it included a number of particular revelations that blows up the concept of the series, and takes it into the grand, wide open world beyond the wall around post-apocalyptic Chicago. So what adventures await Tris, Four and the rest of the gang? Read the book! Or, better still, check out the first trailer for Allegiant below.

Lionsgate released the new trailer today:

As you may recall, Insurgent ended with Tris (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) leading a revolt against the cast system in Chicago that was subjugating some clans and giving complete power to others, while Divergents like Tris, people who can fit in with any cast, were being killed. With the system destroyed, Allegiant will see Tris and friends go over the wall, an act once forbidden, to explore the rest of the world that they had been told was destroyed. It turns out, not so much.

Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer and Daniel Dae Kim will all return for part three. The biggest addition to the cast is Jeff Daniels, who plays David, a man that has the answers as to why the cast system was set up in Chicago and why Divergents are so critically important to the future. Hopefully, the movie will also answer the question why Tris doesn’t smother Teller’s character Peter in his sleep given the fact that he changes allegiances like other people change socks.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant opens March 18, 2016. Part two of the finale, The Divergent Series: Ascendant is scheduled for release on March 24, 2017.
