If Lara Croft were an actual person, she would have quite an impressive resume. She has been reincarnated in video games, two feature films, comic books, novels, theme park rides, and a currently in development film reboot that is currently seeking a director. And she’s not done yet. Rise of the Tomb Raider, the most recent addition to the Tomb Raider video game franchise, is set to be released this holiday season for Xbox. Publishers for the endeavor are Microsoft and Square Enix, with Crystal Dynamics as developer. A new trailer has been released in anticipation, titled “Descent Into Legend”, which features new and never before seen gameplay footage from the third-person, action-adventure addition to the video game saga.
Through video releases with titles including “Advancing Storm” and “Prophet’s Tomb”, fans have gotten a sneak peek into the actual gameplay. “Descent Into Legend” is the title of the latest video, which offers more depth and backstory into the world Lara will be navigating to find the Lost City of Kitezh. In “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” Lara Croft embarks on her first great tomb raiding expedition to uncover an ancient mystery that places her in the cross-hairs of a ruthless organization known as Trinity. This new trailer – entitled “Descent Into Legend” – features never-before-seen gameplay footage as Lara explores vast, awe-inspiring ancient tombs filled with traps and puzzles, and battles the harsh elements and landscapes in her search for the Lost City of Kitezh.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the sequel to the Tomb Raider game reboot that occurred in 2013, and is already setting up quite a name for itself. Said to feature high-quality CG characters FX and cut-scenes via performance capture, the studio has already claimed that this Tomb Raider take is “the most immersive and visually stunning Tomb Raider game ever made.” This statement is definitely backed up by the footage in the newest video, showcasing Ms. Croft swimming, traversing Siberian snow, swinging, and falling- all in amazing detail.
Writing for Rise of the Tomb Raider is handled once again by Rhianna Pratchett, whose 2013 Tomb Raider reboot saw over one million copies sold over the course of just two days of release.
Plot wise, the story centers around Lara Croft and Jonah Maiava, who trying to find the Siberian Lost City of Kitezh in order to unearth some supernatural secrets that could be behind some world myths. Animals and events prove to be just as threatening as humans, and Lara has to defend herself against both in this gameplay environment.
Some other changes in gameplay this time around are increased mobility, as players can utilize combat tactics, sneak attacks, and stealth maneuvers. All of this information is setting some pretty damn high expectations!
Rise of the Tomb Raider is set for release exclusively for Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 10, 2015 in North America; November 13, 2015 in Europe. It will eventually be made available for Microsoft Windows in early 2016, and for Playstation 4 in late 2016.
