It’s now confirmed that Tom Payne (Luck) has joined the cast of AMC‘s The Walking Dead. and will play Paul Monroe, better known to The Walking Dead comic book readers as Jesus. We’ll see him before the upcoming season six finishes and there are hints that more characters from the comic are posed to make their debut as well. Who might those characters be and exactly who is this Jesus guy?

jesuswalkingPaul “Jesus” Monroe is one Kung-Fu Flying Kick Zombie killer that quickly grew to cult like popularity in the comics. He’s tough and ready to take on anything and anyone from zombies to bad guys. A lot of people were speculating that Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) would take on things Jesus does in the comic, but I’m glad to see that the character is coming to the small screen. In fact, I’m looking forward to seeing Daryl and Jesus met and fight zombies and bad guys together, I think they will be fast friends and a lethal combination of fighting styles.3305958-jesusOf course once word started to hit the Internet of the casting of Jesus, that reignited the speculation about when we might see Negan, the guy that made comic book fans long for the idyllic days of the Governor. Show runner Scott Gimple has said:

There’s a particular story in that arc that I’m very excited for. But because we know where we’re going, we have some opportunities to play around with it and put some things in that will lead up to [Negan and Alexandria] in different ways yet fulfill the story Robert told to the Nth degree by utilizing some slightly different approaches. Lineups and timelines and the whole 9 yards.

Andrew Lincoln, aka Rick Grimes is also looking forward to Negan hitting the small screen:

There are astonishingly brilliant and thrilling characters that I am convinced we would be idiots not to meet in our journey; I would be very surprised if we don’t see Negan on the horizon in the not-too-distant future.

What struck me, that I’ve always been excited about, is we’re coming into the sixth season of this show … and it’s the medieval part of The Walking Dead comic, where you realize that there are these isolated communities that don’t really know other ones exist. But they’re all building and forming themselves with their own image. And then there’s a clash of those communities. That, to me, is really interesting and when it gets really exciting with all the action. It turns into this insane, near-apocalyptic landscape that we’ve never seen before. That is almost a reimagining and a restart for society and humanity. And that is such a rich thing to tell.

Jesus plays a big part in bringing those communities together and it will be fun to see how that story line falls out on television. What Walking Dead character from the comics are you most looking forward to seeing make the jump from comic book page to small screen?
