In just a few short weeks, the latest James Bond adventure, Spectre, will open in theaters worldwide. Not only is it hotly anticipated like any Bond movie is, but given the near-universal acclaim of Skyfall, the hype can no longer be empirically measured. But now the celebrations have been cooled to some degree by talk about the future of Bond, specifically the future face of Bond. Having now completed four Bond movies, it would not be unreasonable to expect that star Daniel Craig might be looking to move on, and now in an interview, he says that yes, he’s done with Bond. Unless they drive a dump truck full of money up to his house, of course.
While talking to Time Out London about Spectre, Craig was asked point blank if he was up for another Bond movie. “Now?” he said. “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists. No, not at the moment. Not at all. That’s fine. I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.”
Well that sounds kind of definitive. But when the interviewer went in to confirm, he said, “I haven’t given it any thought. For at least a year or two, I just don’t want to think about it,” Craig continued. “I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who the fuck knows? At the moment, we’ve done it. I’m not in discussion with anybody about anything. If I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.”
So he’s saying there’s a chance… Basically, it seems as though Craig hasn’t put a lot of thought into the possibility of a fifth Bond film for him, and all this is rather off the cuff. I’m sure it’s more than a matter of money, although that is an incentive, but if we give Craig some time to recover from what is, in fact, a lengthy and difficult shoot, he might have a more considered answer to the question.
Adding to that speculation though, Craig was equally candid on the subject of who might play Bond next. “Look, I don’t give a fuck. Good luck to them!” he said. “All I care about is that if I stop doing these things we’ve left it in a good place and people pick it up and make it better. Make it better, that’s all.”
Well, he didn’t discount the possibility of Jane Bond at all, so the door’s open Hayley Atwell.
Spectre opens here in North America on November 6.
