For the love of all that’s old school, here is some crazy awesome casting news! Over the weekend different online sources reported that actors were screen-testing for different roles in Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of The Power Rangers. The studio has now made an official announcement on the first cast member who is set to play the Pink Ranger.
Naomi Scott ( known from “The Martian” & “Terra Nova”) will star as Kimberly, AKA The Pink Ranger. There are other actors reportedly vying for parts in the film which include: KJ Apa (“Shortland Street”), Austin Butler (“Arrow,” “The Carrie Diaries”) and Mitchell Hope (“Descendants”) for the role of Jason/The Red Ranger and Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), Ross Butler (“Chasing Life”) and Brian “Sene” Marc (“Major Crimes”) are both in talks to play Zack/The Black Ranger. Scott confirmed the news via her own Instagram and a followup tweet

Many have been worried about the reboot, but the original creator Haim Saban is acting as producer along with Brian Casentini and Allison Shaermur. Screenwriters of X-Men: First Class & Thor ( Zack Stentz and and Ashley Miller) have been working on the screenplay for the film, which they describe as a modern reboot of the long-running franchise. It will stick to the age old premise where: a group of ordinary high school kids find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and harness that to fight together as a team to save the world from evil forces.
20th Century Fox previously released two feature films, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie in 1995 and Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie in 1997.
Currently the film is set to be directed by Project Almanac‘s Dean Israelite with a debut in theaters for January 13, 2017.
