SyFy Releases First Trailer For ‘The Magicians’ And Gives Us A Peek Into The Dark Side Of Magic School
It’s easy to be terrified when one of your favorite books gets optioned for a television show or a film. There’s that fear that people just won’t “get it.” They’ll turn the story you love into something completely different, and lose the feel and the integrity of the story.
With a series like The Magicians by Lev Grossman, there’s a real fear that SyFy, who is producing a TV adaptation of the books that’s set to premiere in January 2016, would turn the show into something cute. Although Grossman pays homage to Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, The Magicians series is very much adult – very adult and very dark.
Thankfully, SyFy isn’t downplaying any of that.
The trailer for the upcoming series premiered at NYCC this past weekend. It promises everything lovers of the books want to see from the show.
We’ll get to see Quentin (Jason Ralph) struggle with finally living the life he’s craved forever as he studies magic at Brakebills. We’ll get to see his friends Eliot (Hale Appleman) and Margo (Janet from the books, played by Summer Bishil) revel in their abilities. We’ll also get to see Julia’s (Stella Maeve) transformation in the first season.
Although SyFy is embracing the darkness of the story, it thankfully appears to be keeping its wit. There’s a lot of humor in Grossman’s work and the story would suffer without it.
Check out the trailer and let us know what you think… oh, and for fans of the book, try not to squeal the 1:30 mark because what happens is flawlessly chilling.
