Hearing that The Walking Dead and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles share a common thread isn’t that far-fetched when you really think about it. Your first assumption for their connection would probably be that they both started out as comic books before getting television adaptations. But, while true, that’s not all. When we say they share a common thread, we mean it almost literally, as one person has woven himself into the production of both The Walking Dead and TMNT– and we’ve never even seen his face. His name is Steven Ho, and he’s the man responsible for both Lennie James’ (who plays Morgan on The Walking Dead) flawless stick work, and Donatello’s.
Ho played Donatello in the second and third movies in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film series, and has been helping out many stars with their fight training for years. You may have caught him on Conan a few times showing off his skill set. Most recently, Ho has been training James with the bo staff. James spoke with Vulture about how pleased he is with his training.
“I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I took to it much faster than I thought I would. And, that made shooting the series a lot better. It meant that we could push along what we’d show in an episode at a higher level. And, I feel like the stick has become important to Morgan’s identity.”
We’ve already seen how impressive James’ bo staff skills are on the show, and now we know why! Check out the video below to watch Ho in action, helping Conan to become a Turtle in training.
