Next ‘Mad Max’ Might Have No Furiosa

As we head into the final two months of the year, we’ll be getting a glut of prestige pictures from the various studios and distributors as they try and make a run for Oscar glory. Still, it’s hard to imagine that no matter how good the films will be over the next 10-12 weeks, there will not be another action movie as intense as Mad Max: Fury Road. The nerd class loved Fury Road, and not just on a technical level. In a strange twist, Mad Max Rockatansky played by Tom Hardy was upstaged in a Mad Max movie by Imperator Furiosa played by Charlize Theron. Sadly though, it seems like there won’t be more Furiosa in Mad Max 5.

In an interview with Digital Spy (via Coming Soon), Mad Max writer/director George Miller said that while there is some role for Furiosa (and Theron) in the future, it won’t be a big one, even if she’s back at all. “I’m not sure, is the answer,” Miller said. “She’s not in the Mad Max [sequel] story, but in one of the stories there’s an interaction between [Max and Furiosa]. I can’t really say more than that because it’s still in progress.”

Speaking of works in progress, don’t call Mad Max 5 by the title Mad Max: Wasteland, which, despite coming from Miller, is still not 100 per cent certain as the title. “That name came out, that was just a working title,” he explained. “Nico Lathouris and I wrote deep backstories on all the characters and they eventually became screenplays – so we have two [more movies]. I’m happy to say that there’s discussions about them right now, but I hope the next film I make is a very small without any special effects and not many stunts.”

In the meantime, it looks like Mad Max: Fury Road isn’t done making news yet as film critic Mike McGranahan (via Uproxx) has discovered that Warner Bros. is launching a full-court press Oscar campaign for Fury Road, including acting nods for Hardy and Theron, and a shot at Best Picture.

Interesting. Certainly, Fury Road was one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year, which would typically make a movie shipshape for some Oscar trophies, but the Academy doesn’t often reward movies like Fury Road. Having said that though, there will certainly be an opportunity for Fury Road to pick up a great many technical Oscar nominations, and I wouldn’t be surprised either if Theron got a nod for Best Actress. Being an action bad ass worked for Sigourney Weaver in Aliens, after all. We’ll find out in January.

Mad Max: Fury Road is currently on Blu-ray, DVD and video-on-demand.
