Halloween is right around the corner, and with it comes an annual offering of frightful films.  Along with the recently released Green Inferno, this year promises frights for kids with this weekend’s Goosebumps, frights for lovers with Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak, and frights for those who can stand the shaky-cam with the latest (and final?) entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise, Ghost Dimension.  Hell, for those that just want to be tortured for 90 minutes, there’s even the new Jem movie coming next week, which will have theaters pulling double duty as torture chambers during the two weeks the guaranteed flop is in wide release.  Yes, October is the perfect time of year for Hollywood to unleash the terror and, this year, a new film maker has been added to the list of “Purveyors of Horror”: the wonderful Karen Gillan.

Conventional, the second short film directed by Gillan, is part of Fun Size Horror’s push for a new horror film to be released every day through Halloween.  You may remember Gillan discussing the film last month at FanExpo Canada but, if not, you can hear the synopsis straight from the former companion’s mouth here:

If you prefer to simply read the cliff notes, Fun Size Horror describes Conventional as:

[A] tale of a leading lady’s fall from stardom. The film stars Gillan as Rachel Milligan, Lara Sebastian as her newest rival, along with bevy of Stu Macs played by Matty Cardarople, James Ransone, Michael May and many more.

Ready to take a gander?  If you have ten minutes, turn off the lights, sit down in front of your computer with the volume turned up, and enjoy the experience of Conventional.

As if the world needed another reason to love Karen.

This wonderful short film is just the latest project Gillan has taken since leaving the TARDIS back in 2012, though she returned briefly in 2013 to wish Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor farewell.  This year, Gillan has been touring the convention circuit and will be attending the upcoming Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in San Jose, CA on November 21 and 22, as well as the Phoenix Comicon Fan Fest, taking place in Phoenix, AZ December 4-6.  If you happen to run into her, make sure to let her know just how much you enjoyed her film!

Which is your favorite Gillan role?  Are you going to be attending either of the Fan Fests for a meet and greet?
