This one feels like it’s been a long time coming, but it’s nice to have official word: Nike has created working Air Mags, the fictional brand of shoes that Michael J. Fox wore in the “future 2015” during Back to the Future II, and they will be going on sale in Spring 2016!
Even though Nike announced a while back that this was happening, it was all very speculative due to pending patents and prohibitive technology issues. However, it appears that the folks at the shoe company have been working in relative secrecy on the project, and they have delivered the first functional pair of the shoes to none other than Fox himself. Behold this tweet from the Michael J. Fox Foundation:

It’s definitely special for Nike to be working with Fox’s foundation to make this a charity event, and it’s not the first time these two companies have collaborated: in 2011, Nike held a ten-day auction for 1,500 limited-edition pairs of Nike Air Mag replicas (without the self-lacing technology, obviously), with proceeds of more than $9.4 million going to help raise awareness of and find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease (with which Fox is afflicted).
Accompanying the pair of Air Mags was also a hand-written letter from Tinker Hatfield, longtime Nike shoe designer and one of the folks primarily responsible for the creation of the iconic film footwear. the letter is transcribed below, and you can check out a picture of the letter along with the official press release over on the MJFF website.
Almost thirty years ago, we embarked on a journey to create a glimpse into “the future.” Although the project started as science fiction, we’re now proud to turn that fiction into fact. As the first, most celebrated wearing of the Nike Air Mag, we wanted you to be the first to receive a living pair. “I meant Nike Mag” (I must have “air” on the brain)!
What is so special about the Nike Air Mag is its impact continues to resonate. We may never know its final legacy, but we continue to work on projects that carry and progress some of its principles.
As you well know, innovation never stops at Nike so we’re excited about what lies ahead for this idea. We know if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.
In addition to your personal pair, we’re creating more pairs for support in aid of the Michael J. Fox foundation in 2016. We hope that the combined effort will raise even more than the $9.4 million contributed in 2011 and to eliminating in some way Parkinson’s Disease in our lifetime!
