Ever since Disney snapped up the film rights to Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, it’s a solid Internet bet that Disney wouldn’t let such a huge franchise sit on the shelf gathering dust. The real questions were, Would they make one in time for Harrison Ford to still be able to play the part and if not who would be recast in the iconic role? (I’m looking at you Chris Pratt) Now long time Indiana Jones producer Frank Marshall has laid down the law on recasting, at least for Indiana Jones 5.
While talking recently with Total Film, Marshall had this to say about Indiana Jones 5:
There are a lot of rumors. We haven’t even sat down to talk about Indy yet… at some point we’ll sit down. But there’s a bunch of people who could probably take the baton. [But we are] not doing the Bond thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones… we have to figure this out.
Now Fan favorite Chris Pratt threw his name into the Jurassic Park ring and lo and behold he ended up in the latest installment of dinosaurs chomping on park visitors, and while he hasn’t just come out and said he wants the Jones job, he’s certainly not ruled out anything if the opportunity presented itself.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull tried to set up Shia Labeouf as the son and heir apparent to Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones, but I’m not sure that will continue after the lackluster fan responses to the character and Labeoff’s recent run ins with drugs and the law. That didn’t stop Robert Downey Jr. from making a comeback, so there’s hope. Labeouf was great in Fury, and he does have some serious acting chops when he is focused, but can he keep it together for such a tent pole franchise if Harrison Ford isn’t there to help?
If Ford is going to take the lead role in Indiana Jones 5 then they had better get cracking.
