After Jurassic World made a staggering 1.6 billion dollars at the Box Office, Universal Studios was quick to order a sequel – set for summer 2018. At the time of that announcement, it really wasn’t much of a surprise; movie makes a tons of cash and the studio wants a second helping – rinse, wash, and repeat kind of thing (except, you know, with Dinos and money). It is now apparent that Universal wants a 3rd helping! Yes, that’s right, there’s is talks of making the Jurassic Series into a trilogy.
Apparently Jurassic World writer/director Colin Trevorrow has had a trilogy in mind from the very beginning , unbeknownst to anyone except, himself, and Steven Spielberg.
SlashFilm has the report, stating that while Trevorrow is sideline with working on Star Wars: Episode IX, and thusly won’t be back for any of the JW sequels, he is handling the script outline:
Colin Trevorrow is busy working on an outline. He’s been working with Steven [Spielberg]. And they have an idea for the next two movies actually. It was designed as a trilogy, unbeknown to us. It’s a happy surprise.
Previously, Trevorrow has gone on record revealing his thoughts on where the story would go in the sequel:
I feel like the idea that this isn’t always going to be limited to theme parks, and there are applications for this science that reach far beyond entertainment,” he explained. “And when you look back at nuclear power and how that started, the first instinct was to weaponise it and later on we found it could be used for energy.”
“What if this went open source? It’s almost like InGen is Mac, but what if PC gets their hands on it? What if there are 15 different entities around the world who can make a dinosaur?”
And Dr Wu says in the film, when he’s warning Dr Mesrani, ‘we’re not always going to be the only ones who can make a dinosaur’. I think that’s an interesting idea that even if we don’t explore fully in this film, there is room for this universe to expand. I shouldn’t use the word universe, because people will think we’re making a Jurassic World universe — we’re not.”
Based on the above interview, it seems the sequel will have militarized dinos (with freakin’ laser beams) running around on a Global scale. That would certainly live up to the Jurassic World namesake. As to what‘s in store for this now proposed 3rd film, well, there is only one frontier left unexplored….
No word yet on who will be directing the second and/or third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, but with both Trevorrow and Spielberg onboard to mold and shape it, Dinos will keep on ruling.
The Jurassic World sequel is set to hit theaters on June 22nd, 2018.
