A little over a month till the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it’s interesting to note just how little we don’t know about the new film in terms of story or how the various characters come together. Of course, specifically, what we’re talking about is if any of the young characters are linked genealogically to any of the characters from the original Star Wars trilogy. Perhaps this is a clue. The latest TV advertisement for The Force Awakens seems to be pointing pretty strongly that once of the new characters has a familial connection to one of the big three. Are we crazy, or did this ad just out who the heir to the Solo Empire is?
The new ad was unveiled yesterday on Twitter, but let’s roll it via YouTube instead:
That’s Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong’o) you hear delivering the voiceover, ““I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes.” And then there’s the suggestive editing, disolving from an image of Rey (Daisy Ridley) to Han Solo (Harrison Ford), followed by the tage line “Every generation has a story.” The inference could be that Rey is the next generation of Solos, and that Han is her father. Who else would dare to pilot the Millennium Falcon with such gusto unless their last name was “Solo.”
Like I said though, it’s all suggestive but not conclusive. Kanata could be talk metaphorically about eyes, and the things she sees being more about the passion and drive of a new generation of freedom fighters; “generation” too being a more general term and not just meaning direct inheritance from father to daughter. J.J. Abrams is proving once again why he’s the master of the mystery box, making us guess about things, perhaps out of context, as we eagerly await this new movie. Sadly, we will keep guessing too.
All will be revealed on December 18 when Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters everywhere.
