Thanks to a combination of initiative by original host Joel Hodgson, the wonderful world wide web, and generous contributions from viewers like you, we could soon be seeing brand new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000! The Kickstarter goal is pretty steep, with $2,000,000 for three feature-length episodes and over $5,000,000 for a full twelve episode season, but with how fast these numbers have been climbing, the possibility doesn’t seem too out of reach! For those of you that are unfamilliar with MST3K, here’s a little background info. The show is a cult classic, originally airing in the late 1980’s on Minnesota public access before getting picked up by Comedy Central and Syfy. This show tore into B-movies with a masterful mix of obscure pop culture references and just the right amount of snarky comments. There would be an all new host, although Hodgson is still very much involved with the goings-on of getting the show off the ground. He’ll be participating in a Reddit AMA today at 4 pm EDT where he’ll hopefully release more details. Hints of a revival for the series have been being planted for a while now, however, if you were paying close attention.
In an oral history of MST3K that was posted by The Wire back in April of 2014, this little ominous nugget of info was dropped:
But this year Mystery Science Theater may finally get a long-rumored, heavily anticipated reboot. This spring Hodgson is hoping to start a new onlineincarnation of the show, one that will feature a fresh (and as-yet-unannounced) host and cameos from many MST3K alumni.
Hodgson himself elaborated:
“Even avid viewers sometimes don’t realize that every major role in the show had been swapped out over time. So in my mind, the show is built to be refreshed with new people and new ideas. It’s like Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle as it applies to MST3K: If it doesn’t change, it’s not the same show. And fortunately for us, as long as there are movies, there are always going to be cheesy movies. “
He danced around the subject even further during a Reddit AMA, but this answer he gave seemed pretty straight-forward:
“I think, for the reboot, obviously people would really want to see the original robots back. So I intend to do that. But hopefully we’ll bring some new ones too.”
The past year or so have also seen increased amounts of MST3K news, with announcements of being able to watch episodes on RiffTrax, Vimeo, and Amazon Prime.
Moving forward, though, there’s so much more (and newer) fodder for a brand new MST3K to run with! What new things are you excited to see with this reboot? And what classic components are you itching to see brought back? Having $100K reeled in on its first day, it seems fairly safe to treat this as an eventuality rather than a possibility!
