Yesterday, as per recent tradition, we got a trailer for the trailer for The Huntsman: Winter’s War. The sorta-sequel to 2012’s Snow White and the Huntsman promises to be the same kind of effects-filled, Tolkein-esque gothic adventure as the original, but with the focus now on Chris Hemsworth‘s title character. But you know who stands out in this first full trailer? All the ladies. It is the tradition of fairy tales for the men to fight and the women to be saved, but is Winter’s War about to throw shade on that sexist folklore in a big way? If the trailer is to be believed, the answer is a definite maybe.
So let’s take a look at the full trailer then!
The chronology might be a bit confusing, but I think the jist is that Eric (Hemsworth) and Sara (Jessica Chastain) were trained to be warriors in the service of the Ice Queen Freya (Emily Blunt) and we will see that in flashbacks. In the present, meanwhile, after the events of Snow White, Freya and her sister Ravenna (Charlize Theron) – thought dead at the end of the first film – compete to see who will possess the magic mirror. Or, in other words:
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.
When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.
Admittedly, I wasn’t terribly interested in seeing this film until the trailer, which does a great job of almost making Hemsworth seem superfluous to the movie that’s named after his character. It seems that the real star of Winter War, like Snow White, is Charlize Theron, who was so magnetic, and twisted, and gorgeous in that first film. It was actually pretty amazing how much she got away with, up to and including the way Ravenna practically orgasms when she kills the king. It will be very interesting to see what she’ll do in the sequel, especially with Blunt to bounce off of as her sister.
What madness will be unleashed in The Huntsman: Winter’s War? I guess we’ll find out when the movie arrives in theaters everywhere on April 22, 2016.
