What once seemed to be a pet project of Guillermo del Toro‘s has now become a full blown Warner Bros./DC Entertainment joint, and work on Justice League Dark is persisting despite del Toro bailing for other (greener?) pastures. Uber-producer Scott Rudin is now rallying the cause, and as Warner Bros. struggles to get original recipe Justice League off the ground – part one is due in theaters in 2017 – it seems that Dark is coming along with progress in the casting of this other League. Sources have leaked the names of three potential JL Dark members, as well as some additional casting details that might make you think this is really the League to watch in the coming months.
According to Latino-Review, who always seems to know these things, Warners has got their eye on Ron Perlman as Swamp Thing, a holdover suggestion from when del Toro was going to make Dark. Whether or not Perlman’s up for the job is the real question given his past comments on the cumbersome make-up process for Hellboy, but perhaps they’re thinking that Swamp Thing will be a motion-captured performance.
The second bit of rumored casting has to do with the key part of John Constantine, which Latino-Review says is down to two potential actors, Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor. Farrell is the front-runner owing to his current status in another Warner Bros. franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but the appeal of the two actors is apparently so strong that whoever doesn’t get to play Constantine will be the first choice to play Jason Blood, the human version of Etrigan the Demon.
The third name on the roll call is Monica Bellucci, fresh from being so totally underused in Spectre that it bordered on criminal. Bellucci is the first choice for Madame Xanadu, a wonderfully enigmatic character with a long history and an origin that goes back to Arthurian times. As for the rest of the League, Latino-Review says they’re looking for “a comedic presence” for Deadman, and a Hispanic or black actress to play Zatanna. (Personally, I think the should cast Alexandra Daddario for Zatanna. Put her in a top hat and she’s the spitting image of the comic book Zatanna, but that’s just me.)
In one last piece of casting news, Latino-Review added that Cara Delevingne may appear in JL Dark as her Suicide Squad character Enchantress, which would be an elegant and thematically appropriate way of tying Dark to the rest of the DC Comics Cinematic Universe.
Justice League Dark will follow Constantine as he puts together a team of supernatural, magical and/or mystical heroes to combat an imminent threat when “a series of ancient tomes stolen by a madman hellbent on the destruction of humanity.” No word on a release date for the film yet, but we’ll have that and other details when they become available.
