If you are reading this right now, you are likely at work or school and are eagerly awaiting the chance to get home to binge watch Jessica Jones, or you are taking a break from binge watching Jessica Jones. In any event, executive producer and showrunner Melissa Rosenberg has submitted an interesting bit of trivia concerning her show, the revelation that a major Marvel hero was supposed to appear alongside the titular character of Jessica Jones. How big? Pretty big. As in getting her own movie in November 2018 big! As in, she was almost part of the New Avengers line-up at the end of Age of Ultron big.
Yes, in an interview with IGN, Rosenberg said that in her original approach to the Jones series, back when it was in development at ABC in 2010, the part of Jessica’s best friend was going to be filled by Carol Danvers, AKA: Captain Marvel, just as it is in the comic books.
“Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers,” Rosenberg explained. “But between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about ‘the other,’ and in the cinematic universe that’s not the mythology. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie.”
Stand alone, it might have made more sense to host Captain Marvel as basically a side character in a TV show, but with the interconnected universe Marvel has laid out, is it perhaps better to have Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker (or Patsy Walker/Hellcat as she’s known in the comic books) filling Danvers’ part on the show?
“[A]s it turned out, Patsy Walker ended up being an incredibly—a much more appropriate fit with Jessica,” Rosenberg added. “It was better that her best friend was not someone with powers. It actually ends up being a really great mirror for her.”
So did Rosenberg make the right call? Why not head over, or head back over, to Netflix to watch the complete first season of Jessica Jones, which is now available to stream.
