That brings us to today when CBS This Morning previewed and interview done with Lucas regarding the Vanity Fair article and his split with the Star Wars franchise. Here’s what Lucas had this to say,
“The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans,'” Lucas said. “People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems – it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘fine…. I’ll go my way and I let them go their way.'”
At this point, there’s probably been enough time to decipher what the movies are really about. Fans do understand that the movie is about family problems; that it’s a space-age soap opera. Fans also love seeing huge spaceships and light saber battles. Unfortunately for Lucas, Fans want both. And from the sounds of things, knowing what he knows now and if he could go back in time, there’s a good chance Lucas would take out all the science fiction from the story.
“When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don’t go over to their house and drive by to see what they’re doing,” he said laughing. “The third one is you don’t show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it… You just say ‘Nope, gone, history, I’m moving forward.'”
It’s understandable for Lucas to feel this way. Star Wars is his baby, and now it’s become bigger than him. There more you think about it, there more of a bummer it becomes. Here you have a man who writes this epic drama. Then it goes on to become a movie that’s able to stand the test of time. In fact, it’s only gotten better with age. He and the movie have gone through their ups and downs. Now 38 years later, a new chapter gets written and the movie wants nothing to do with him.
The entire interview with Lucas will be released sometime in December and can be seen on CBS This Morning.
