Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Thor in particular, are furiously nodding their heads in agreement. Chris Hemsworth recently shared his exciting vision for the future of Thor: Ragnarok and it has fans of the mighty Avenger saying, “Verily, we shall align our cause with yours and charge forth with you into the third installment of your flowery speech-saturated franchise, Chris, He-who-is…Worthy of… uh, Being-Hemmed…”
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Hemsworth shares his opinion that the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok should be more similar in tone with Guardians of the Galaxy rather than the previous Thor installments, saying:
“I think [Thor 3] needs to be injected with that sort of smart wit and unexpected kind of humor, kind of what James Gunn came in and did with Guardians [of the Galaxy]. It was like off center and unpredictable, and I think we can definitely use a dose of that, you know?”
Especially after Thor: The Dark World failed to deliver in the eyes of some fans, Hemsworth’s words appear as a friend, as a balm. The Dark World was by no means a failure, but it failed to match the critical and commercial success shared by its fellow Phase 2 sequels, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Winter Soldier. That’s why it’s so exciting to hear the star of the Marvel vehicle talking about such a drastic shift in overall tone. What’s more, the production appears to have ample tools to achieve the tonal shift.
Firstly, we recently found out that Mark Ruffalo will be reprising his role of Bruce Banner/Hulk, causing some to refer to the movie as a “buddy pic.” Then, we have Taika Waititi, who has been tapped to direct Thor: Ragnarok and seems uniquely suited to marry the themes established in the previous Thor movies with a lighter, more humorous tone. Waititi is known for directing quirky, off-beat movies full of heart and depth, like Eagle vs Shark and Boy.
We also can’t forget about Hemsworth’s comedy chops. After crushing a series of hilarious sketches on SNL and delivering some of the funniest lines in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hemsworth’s comedy cred is nothing to take lightly. In fact, well-known comedienne Melissa McCarthy had this to say about working with Hemsworth on the upcoming Ghostbusters reboot:
He’s weirdly, weirdly funny like so funny that I don’t know what’s he’s doing, doing action movies. I remember Kristen and I just looking at each other and we’re like—and I think she meant this seriously—’Did he bring writers?’ because he was one of the best improvisers that I’ve ever worked with. I wouldn’t say that. I would just say he’s swell. Weirdly great improviser, super funny and there’s just hours of footage of us bawling laughing because we had gone crazy. He was awesome.
So there you have it. Thor: Ragnarok is going to take a much-appreciated departure from the previous films and tread onto a newer, quirkier branch of Yggdrasil.
What do you think about Thor’s new direction, are you excited for Ragnarok?
