The gossip on this side of the galaxy is that the next Men in Black movie will feature a woman in black. We’ve had a so-quick-you-could-miss-it glimpse of how this would play out in the last moments of the first Men in Black movie, where Will Smith‘s Agent Jay seems to have partnered up with Linda Fiorentino‘s character, Laurel Weaver. The idea was apparently scrapped for the next additions to the MIB franchise; with Tommy Lee Jones‘ Agent Kay back in business and Fiorentino nowhere to be found. Series producers have changed their tune, it seems, because now they’re promising to feature a female lead character in Men in Black 4. Here’s what producer Laurie McDonald said of the next MiB installment when speaking with the BBC:
“There will be a prominent woman in black in the fourth [film].”
So it only took 4 films, but there we go! A promise for a female lead agent! Not much more about the movie is definite, however. While speaking with Collider during promo for After Earth, Will Smith seemed pretty firm with three films being enough for him:
“I think three is enough for me. Three of anything is enough for me. We’ll look at it and we’ll consider it, but it feels like that it might be time to let someone else do that.”
He did say he’d consider, though! Add to that how McDonald’s fellow producer, Walter Parkes, told the BBC to “Never count Will out,” and that’s a pretty strong maybe! He did opt out of the Independence Day sequel, but maybe Concussion‘s release next month will have Smith itching to get back in the game. And with the info that got leaked from Sony’s e-mails, we know that they were toying with a possible MiB/21 Jumpstreet crossover film, so the possibilities are plentiful!
For now we’ll just take the win of finally getting a FEMALE in Black, and leave you with that last scene of the first Men in Black movie as an ode to Fiorentino for showing us what could be.
