For months now, we have heard rumors about a collaborator that J.J. Abrams brought from his Star Trek franchise over to the world of Star Wars. In a sizzle reel played at Comic-Con last summer, we caught a glimpse of Star Trek star Simon Pegg (who has stepped up to earn a writing credit on the 2016 sequel Star Trek Beyond) on the set of the new Star Wars movie in a big, weird alien fat suit. We now have photos confirming details about his character.
The Disney Channel just released a Star Wars: The Force Awakens featurette entitled Rey’s Adventure. The featurette, as you might have guessed, focuses on Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. We get some really cool behind-the-scenes shots, as well as more of a look at the showdown between the Millennium Falcon and some TIE fighters on Jakku.
This is all well and good, but the shot in the featurette that is of particular interest to us right now is the behind-the-scenes shot in which Ridley and a big, weird, fat alien take some direction from Abrams. As you might have guessed by the decision to describe the alien seen in the featurette in the exact same way as Pegg’s character seen in the Comic-Con sizzle reel, this alien appears to be Simon Pegg in full costume. Not only does the body of the alien seem to match the suit worn by Pegg in the Comic-Con reel, it also seems to fit a description of Pegg’s character given by MakingStarWars.net earlier this month:
“He’s got a huge downturned nose. He’s rather troll-like. He’s an angry looking oaf.”
The source also stated that the name of Pegg’s character is Unkar Plutt, which is the perfect name for an angry, troll-like oaf. As if we didn’t already have enough reasons to be excited for The Force Awakens, now we get to look forward to Pegg trolling up the movie.
What do you think of Pegg’s character? Could someone other than his mother learn to love that face?
