Screenwriter Fred Dekker took to Facebook recently to confirm that the script for a new Predator movie had been turned into the studio. He also included some concept art by 7 year old Angus Herndon in his post. This will be the fourth movie in the series (not counting the Alien vs Predator movies; no one counts them. In fact, forget we mentioned them). After setting Arnold Schwarzenegger in the jungle and Danny Glover in the city, the last movie we got was an effort produced by Robert Rodriguez, which took the Aliens approach by giving us multiple creatures and adding an ‘s’ to the title. Predators starred Adrien Brody, who consumed so many protein shakes for the role that he added an entire other Pianist to his body. While the eclectic history of the franchise may not give many clues as to what we’re in for with Predator 4, we do know a few things.
Shane Black will be directing this Predators sequel. Black was the director of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and, more recently, Iron Man 3, so we certainly don’t need to worry about his action movie chops. Not to mention that he helped to refine, if not create, the buddy cop movie when he penned the first two Lethal Weapon movies. Considering the first Predator was directed by John McTiernan of Die Hard fame, it just feels right that this project is being handled by someone who had such a big part in shaping late 80s/early 90s action. Black even had a role in the first Predator as Rick Hawkins.
We also know as of right now there are no plans to include any of the cast from the previous movies, but don’t expect Predator 4 to wipe the slate clean with an absolute reboot. Black has referred to the project as an “inventive sequel” and producer John Davis had this to say:
“…the writing is so fresh, the perspective is so fresh. I’m telling you you’re going to get something you don’t expect and you’re going to say, ‘This is the most entertaining way to reinvent a franchise.”
So far, we seem to have all the right ingredients to get a great, action-packed flick. And with Shane Black on board, we may finally get the Christmas-themed Predator movie that we’ve all been waiting almost 30 years for.
