It should come as no surprise to anyone that reads this website that Sci-Fi fans take their loves seriously. Children have been named after Obi-Wan Kenobi, search any tattoo parlor’s work and you will see dozens of movie inspired artwork or massive themed Christmas displays all in honor of the stories that we grew up on and the world of Science is no exception.

Just recently it was announced that a newly discovered dinosaur would be named after the Pokemon Aerodactyl,  a species of sea sponged named Spongiforma squarepantsii after the Nickelodeon character Spongebob Squarepants and the Gollum Suluensis named for the Lord Of The Rings character. However his does not stop people from petitioning for more discoveries named for popular characters.

Most recently, in 2013, a planet was discovered that bore a striking resemblance to Gallifrey, the fictional home of Doctor Who’s Time Lords. The planet was not renamed and now once again, fans of the Manga and Anime Dragon Ball Z are taking to the web to get the planet Keppler-22B renamed in the honor of Namek, home of Dragon Balls Piccolo that was destroyed during the Freiza Saga. If you are interested in adding your name to the petition, head on over to Change.org and sign your name to honor one of Japan’s most beloved franchises. Check out the pictures below…

This is the real planet Keppler-22B

Which some claim bears a striking resemblance to the planet Namek, seen below.

So what do you think, are the planet similar enough to warrant the name change, or are the fans stretching it a little bit? Let us know what you think!
