MAIN-George-Lucas

In a bittersweet statement last weekend, Kathleen Kennedy, head of Lucasfilm, disclosed to us that George Lucas himself had seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and that “he liked it.” Now that may seem all sweet and no bitter at first; you WANT the creator of a franchise to like the latest installment, right? But the more of the thoughts that Lucas shares on his film, the harder it is to believe that he was being completely sincere in his initial statement.  Read on for more of his own thoughts on the installment, in his own words.Recently, Lucas was at the Kennedy Honors ceremony in Washington, DC, where he was receiving accolades for his life’s work in arts and culture. Vulture snagged a word with him while he was walking down the red carpet, and this was Lucas’ response when asked what he thought about the film:

“I think the fans are going to love it. It’s very much the kind of movie they’ve been looking for.”

Pretty luke-warm, wouldn’t you say? No pun intended. He assures us that the fans are going to love it, and that it’s the kind of movie the fans have been looking for, but he says nothing of himself. Did he love it? Was it not the kind of movie he was looking for?

Hopefully so. As Lucas discussed with Vanity Fair a few weeks ago, he parted ways with Disney when the studio wasn’t on board with taking the new Star Wars Trilogy in the direction Lucas envisioned. He elaborated:

“The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories and they said, ‘We want to make something for the fans.’ People don’t actually realize it’s actually a soap opera and it’s all about family problems – it’s not about spaceships. So they decided they didn’t want to use those stories, they decided they were going to do their own thing so I decided, ‘Fine.’”

This is so disheartening to hear. To sell your brainchild in the first place must have been devastating, given the amount of blood, sweat and tears you’ve invested in it; the $4 billion it sold for may have lessened the sting a bit, but still. At least he feels that J.J. Abrams delivered on something the fans will really like, even if Lucas himself doesn’t as much.
