There has been an awaking, have you felt it? Okay, so while the wait between Star Wars movies has been substantively longer than the wait between Harry Potter universe films, it’s still been a long wait for Potter-heads (or whatever they’re called) for another sojourn into the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Well, it’s not the same as a whole movie, but below is your first look at Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the anticipated return to Rowling’s magical universe, 70 years in the past and just slightly to the left. And unlike last week’s “tease,” there’s actual footage in this one.
This “announcement trailer” sets up the movie pretty good. In it, magizoologist Newt Scamander (played by Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne, takes a break from his global sojourn to study all manner of magical creatures in New York City. And that’s when the shazam hits the fan, so to speak. Let’s leave it the trailer to pick up from there.
Well, despite the significant shift in setting, this still definitely looks like a Harry Potter movie. That’s probably because David Yates, who directed the final four Harry Potter movies, is the man behind the cameras on Fantastic Beats too. Next year promises to be a big year for Potter fans with the release of Fantastic Beasts and the premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on the London stage. It will prove once and for all whether the universe Rowling created has legs beyond the original seven-part Potter story, and something tells me we’ll have that proof by this time next year in the overwhelmingly positive.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be in theaters everywhere on November 18, 2016.
