As you probably know, Star Wars: The Force Awakens made its Hollywood premiere last night, and the first reactions are coming in from everyone who was at the star studded event. While fans will be forming their own opinions as they go to see the movie themselves in the coming days, it appears that at least for now, everyone can breathe a small sigh of relief, as initial reviews from critics are overwhelmingly positive!
Here’s some of the most “prominent” folks and their feedback, along with some celebrity tweets for good measure:
Rebecca Keegan of the L.A. Times tweeted, ” Among its many wonderful qualities, Star Wars: The Force Awakens passes the Bechdel Test. Chracters, design, humor–#StarWars fans, this is the movie you’re looking for.”
“From comedy to costumes, fights to fx to overall feel, J.J. Abrams has created a thoroughly old-fashioned movie,” said Steven Zeitchik, also of the L.A. Times. “Order of cast prominence, in ascending order 5) Driver 4) Boyega 3) BB-8 2) Ford 1)Ridley.”
Jen Yamato from the Daily Beast shared, “The Force Awakens is soooo Star Wars, and Daisy Ridley is the business, and Star Wars.”
Josh Dickey of Mashable wrote, “STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is a strong, promising kickoff. As a standalone, I’d rank it #3 in the series.”
“Need to see THE FORCE AWAKENS again to properly judge the film. Was practically shaking in my seat while it played,” confessed Frosty of Collider. “Not going to say much till I see it again but rest assured THE FORCE AWAKENS is the best STAR WARS since 1983 (Jedi)…maybe 1980 (Empire).”
io9’s Germain Lussier wrote, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens spoke to my every emotion. Most of them good, a few not, but overall it was an amazing, overwhelming experience.”
Creator of ABC’s The Goldbergs, Adam F. Goldberg said, “Yes, I wept next to Paul Lee. Pretty sure he won’t judge me too harshly cause he was choked up too. Ranking: 1. Empire Strikes Back 2. Force Awakens. 3. A New Hope. 4 Return of the Jedi. 5-8 Prequels. Thank You JJ.”
“1st Star Wars review: it was epic, awesome & perfect. The cast was stellar. JJ Killed it!” according to The Office’s Rain Wilson.
Grey’s Anatomy and How To Get Away With Murder creator, Shonda Rhimes beamed, “Holy crap, the Force Awakens is so good in the best old-school way!”

It seems by most of the reviews that The Force Awakens has captured and expanded upon what made the original trilogy so wonderful. According to the writers and celebrities who got the first look at the film, “Episode VII” is the Star Wars we have been waiting for, and is a great introduction to the new trilogy. Based on all of the reviews, so far, it looks like The Force Awakens ranks either second or third in the all time Star Wars film rankings, which is really exciting! I guess the rest of us will have to wait just a few more days before we can voice our own opinions, but the high praise that is already circulating, especially from fans, is very encouraging.
