Like it or not, Universal Pictures is ready to remake The Little Mermaid, although this time around they plan on making it into a live-action flick. None-other-than Sofia Coppola was ready to take on directorial duties for the new movie, which says something. Unfortunately, she changed her mind about six months ago. Some might have thought this the end of the project, but Universal presses on and seeks to replace Coppola with a new director, Rebecca Thomas.
If you’ve never heard of Thomas before, don’t feel bad. She’s made one movie so far – Electrick Children. That movie was, however, met with some fairly positive reviews, so this potential new director of The Little Mermaid appears to have some talent at least. Whether her style will mix with what Universal has in mind for their new production, however, remains to be seen.
If she does get the job, Thomas will be combining talents with writer Richard Curtis (Love, Actually) and the lead actress, Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass).
While some may say that The Little Mermaid doesn’t need to be remade, those who know the original Hans Christian Andersen tale also know that Disney really didn’t follow the original all that well. The story is much darker and doesn’t have the happiest of endings. If Thomas can get the go-ahead from Universal to produce something along the lines of the original story, we might have a movie worth watching. If she’s forced to turn it into yet another hopeful romance, it’ll likely be worth skipping. Unfortunately, no details on which direction the script is going are available yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
