We’re at a point in the life of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where there’s such a number and diversity of characters across many backgrounds, that anyone can show up any time in any movie or show. Falcon popped up in Ant-Man, Lady Sif teamed twice with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Spider-Man will make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. Speaking of Spider-Man, there’s been a lot of excitement about his induction into the MCU, with speculation focused on a) his role in Civil War and b) what to expect from this 2017 solo movie. But now there’s a c) What if Spidey is going to appear in Doctor Strange?
What evidence have we procured? Well, it was pretty easy. It was provided to us and everyone on Twitter by Marvel Studios executive producer Louis D’Esposito:

Okay, it’s not exactly a smoking gun (or a smoking web shooter if you like). Tom Holland does hail from England, so it’s conceivable that he was in the neighborhood and wanted to pop in and say ‘Hi’ to his boss. It also seems unlikely that Marvel would bring Holland in for a Spider-Man cameo in Doctor Strange and then parade him in from of Twitter to say, “Hey, look who ‘stopped by.'” It would be kind of anti-climactic in the end.
On the other hand, we did know way in advanced that Spidey was going to appear in Civil War, and maybe Marvel is of a mind that they want to have build-up to that next solo Spider-Man movie in 2017 because a) it’s the linchpin of the Marvel/Sony deal, and b) it will be third re-working of Spidey for the big screen in 15 years. It’s possible that they want to create as much buzz as humanly possible going in. In the comics, Spider-Man and Dr. Strange don’t have a lot of history together, but if they’re looking for a down-to-Earth character to ground Strange’s trippy combo of strange magic and stranger dimensions, then Spidey’s your man. I guess we’ll wait and see…
Doctor Strange will be in theaters everywhere on November 4, 2016.
