We all know that C-3PO and R2-D2 were both in the movie, but they made separate entrances. In fact, there was some uncertainty if R2-D2 would do more than just stand there. Fortunately he did, and he ended up playing a big role in revealing where Luke had been hiding. Did you know, though, that they were originally supposed to show up together, like always?
“I had originally written R2 and C-3PO showing up together, and Larry very intelligently said, ‘You want to keep them separate from each other. And of course I’m like, ‘No, no, no, Larry. You don’t get it at all!’” Arndt said. Of course he acquiesced, leading to the much larger moments for both characters.”
Thinking back on their scenes, it really did make a difference for them to show up at different times. The first time you see C-3PO, you expect to see R2-D2 somewhere nearby. But when he was no where to be found, questions begin to emerge. One of them may have been if he’s with Luke since we see the droid with a figure many assumed to be the last Jedi. Of course, the big reveal is that he’s actually been in a dormant state since Luke disappeared. this leads to a bigger reveal in that 3PO has been without his close companion for quite some time, but before that they were almost inseparable. How would you feel if you best friend one day stopped talking or doing anything? It’s heart breaking.
“Early on I tried to write versions of the story where [Rey] is at home, her home is destroyed, and then she goes on the road and meets Luke. And then she goes and kicks the bad guy’s ass. It just never worked and I struggled with this. This was back in 2012…It just felt like every time Luke came in and entered the movie, he just took it over. Suddenly you didn’t care about your main character anymore because, ‘Oh f***, Luke Skywalker’s here. I want to see what he’s going to do.'”
If Luke came onto the scene too early, it definitely would have detracted from everything. Think about it. The first thing the audience learns is that Luke has vanished. And now the question is, “Where is he?” To answer than question in the first act would have broken the movie because where would you go from there? But of course that never happened. Instead, a really good story was told.
Star Was The Force Awakens is now out in theaters.
