Wolverine can only hope to have this much fun while he’s dead. Gwenpool started out as a truly inspired mashup cosplay of Gwen Stacy and Deadpool at the San Diego Comic-con. The pink-powered merc quickly went viral, becoming official with appearances in titles like Howard the Duck and the Gwenpool Holiday Special.

Now the amazing afterlife of long-dead Gwen Stacy continues with two ongoing series in other dimensions: Spider-Gwen, which started in February 2015,  and The Unbelievable Gwenpool, which will debut next year. The Unbelievable Gwenpool will be done by writer Christopher Hastings and artists Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano, also known as Gurihiru. Hastings and Gurihiru are also the same team who brought her holiday special to life.

While the original Merc with a mouth has his own dark origin, Gwenpool’s actions come from a different place.”Her whole deal is, she’s from the world that she claims to be–some sort of ‘real world’–and knows of the Marvel Universe as a fictional one. So the series is a lot about her believing she’s in a fictional world with no consequences,” said Hastings in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“She’s seen everyone come back to life at some point, and it sort of seems like she’s living in a video game. And then the book is going to be universe fighting back at that.”
Gwenpool is part of the new wave of unconventional Marvel superheroes like Squirrel Girl and Moon Girl, which inject a sense of fun into the comics experience.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to do a character in a serialized book that can have actual real change,” he added.

The Unbelievable Gwenpool hits comic stores in April 2016.
