When Deadpool opens in less than two months, it will be the first time in 15 years that 20th Century Fox has tried to diversify its big screen mutant universe by making a movie featuring a non-X-Men character. It’s success will determine whether or not Fox can engage a wide-variety of Marvel mutant-based pictures, including, not-coincidentally, X-Force, for whom Deadpool has been both antagonist and ally. We don’t often hear a lot about that X-Force movie that’s in development, but now a piece of concept art has floated to the surface of the internet as if to say, “Yes, this is still a thing.” So are we looking at the line-up of the movie X-Force here?
Courtesy of Gregory Semkow, whose website includes what looks like concept art for Mad Max: Fury Road and the upcoming Masters of the Universe remake, is this image that suspiciously looks like a line-up indicative of the original X-Force: Cable, Cannonball, Domino, Warpath, and what we can assume is Boom Boom. In previous statements, Never Back Down and Kick-Ass 2 filmmaker Jeff Wadlow has said that the version of X-Force he’s putting together will be sticking pretty close to version that appeared in X-Force #1 co-created by Rob Liefeld.
Now the big question: is this legit? The line-up seems right, and not just because it invokes the original comic book X-Force team. Warpath, played by Booboo Stewart, appeared as one of the future X-Men in Days of Future Past, and Cannonball was mentioned in an Easter egg in X2: X-Men United. Plus, you can’t have X-Force without Cable, right? It seems legit, but maybe Semkov is a good guesser.
X-Force has been in development for some time, with still no word on when we might actually see this thing. Perhaps Fox is awaiting the results from the release of Deadpool in order to make a firm commitment to X-Force, which will then surely feature that Ryan Reynolds cameo that will seal the deal. Whether or not Deadpool will come face-to-face with a team made up of Cable, Domino, Warpath, Boom Boom and Cannonball is another story.
