Following up on this week’s plethora of sneak previews, comes one more. We’ve heard a lot about Ghostbusters, the upcoming rebooting of the 1984 classic, mostly because of all that controversy about recasting the film as a showcase for four funny ladies rather than endorsing the return of the original characters. In the midst of all that debate though, we’ve forgotten one vital piece of plot information: just who is going to be the villain for these new Ghostbusters? Who is going to be their Gozer, or Vigo if you will? Well, so far as hints go, we’ve got a pretty good one about the new ghost bad guys. (Yes, “guys.”)
In that preview-packed new edition of Entertainment Weekly, we get the above new photo with Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones looking bad ass, and we get the following description of what all these bad ghosts the lady Ghostbusters will be busting next summer. We know that Neil Casey will be playing the main villain, and Game of Throne’s Charles Dance is part of the cast too, and you can usually bank on him being evil, but who exactly will thy be playing, and in what capacity?
Dead criminals from all eras of New York’s underbelly past have returned to roost among the living in Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot. Pilgrims, old-timey sailors, Revolutionary War spirits, and even a couple of zoot-suited gangsters are ready to take on four formidable female busters looking to rid the city of its phantasmic filth.
Well that sounds awesome! No, really. New York City has a rich and varied history of crime and criminals including politician “Boss” Tweed, Murder Inc. mob boss Albert Anastasia, “Mad Bomber” George P. Metesky, and Joseph “Crazy Joe” Gallo, who was gunned down by rivals at his 43rd birthday party in 1972. There are a lot of interesting real life characters to draw from, or be inspired by, so who all will the Ghostbusters face-off against? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Ghostbusters will be in theaters everywhere on July 15, 2016.
