‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’ Rogue’s Gallery? Krang to Join Bebop, Rocksteady, and Shredder’s Daughter in Film
The staff at NerdBastards is very much divided on the Michael Bay-directed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies. Half of us watched the first film and secretly acknowledged that it at was at least a good way to waste two hours of our time. The other half bayed at the heavens as soon as they caught wind of the new CGI Turtles, cringed as they watched the first teasers roll in and slowly curled themselves into the fetal position all the way up to Act 3. With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2: Out of The Shadows recently announced, most of us feared a repeat of the oh-so-gradual lapse in quality that began with Secret Of The Ooze. What we didn’t expect however, was that the movies would be as bold as to introduce one of the TMNT’s cartoon series most iconic villains.
Yes, that is Krang, conqueror of worlds and red-headed stepchild of Dimension X, making his way into the silver screen and given the full over-the-top CGI treatment. And here’s Krang in what we can only assume is his Terrordrome casual attire:
These concept art sketches were released via Twitter and on the TMNT 2 movie website, following a Rolling Stone Interview, where Michael Bay went on at length about the discussion he had with the people at Industrial Light and Magic, regarding Krang’s presentation. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
[We] start with Ninja Turtles animation. Pablo Helman, a visual-effects supervisor who worked on the Star Wars prequels, appears onscreen and shows Bay the latest version of Krang, a new-to-the-movies villain who is, essentially, a disembodied brain inside a giant robot. “So we’ve eliminated the tentacles,” Helman explains. “Is it too monster-ish?”
“He could have some tentacles,” says Bay. “I just don’t want them coming out of the side. He looks like a stupid octopus.”
We have to hand it to Michael Bay on that one. Removing Krang’s tentacles would have made him look like a big block of shrieking goo. And you can’t make a villain out of shrieking goo, even if you stick him in Frank Horrigan’s Power Armor.
The director also made a brief mention regarding the presentation of childhood favorite mutant oafs, Bebop and Rocksteady, who popped up during the latest official movie trailer.
“You gotta adjust that mass. That mass is not too good yet… is our rhino dude’s head big enough, do you think?”
More importantly, Bay even went ahead and sprinkled some details about sequel’s direction and hinted at introducing a brand-spanking-new villain roster into the mix. Apparently, the movie will also include Shredder’s daughter Karai, “pretty fly for a science guy” Baxter Stockman, and the other half of New York’s hottest will-they-won’t-they crimefighting duo, Casey Jones.
We think things are sounding exciting so far, and are cautiously optimistic that things in TMNT 2: Out of the Shadows won’t turn out to be another villain-choked mess like The Amazing Spiderman 2. If you’re feeling kranked for some Krang, give the latest TMNT 2 trailer a whirl! It’s not gonna be great, but hey. Nobody is expecting Slaughterhouse Five.
